To Obey

In Greek, Latin, Hebrew, French, German, Russian, and English – the words ‘hearing’ and ‘obeying’ have the same etymological root. The English verb ‘to obey’ stems from the Latin obaudire – literally, to listen from below – whose semantic relation is more clearly preserved in the noun ‘obedience.’
